The CPM state secretary,Biman Bose, was apparently appointed the time-keeper

Gharibabu silenced
The CPM state secretary,Biman Bose, was apparently appointed the time-keeper during Sunday’s Left Front rally at Brigade Parade Ground. And not only did he meticulously keep tab on the time the 11 speakers took he even made it his job to ensure they did not overstep the limit. So when anyone finished in time,Bose was all praise, but the moment somebody was late, one of his emissaries rushed to hurry him off the podium.
Only two cases were counted as exceptions. Veteran Forward Bloc leader Ashok Ghosh — Bose could do nothing but comment that he had taken an extra six minutes.
The other was the last speaker,Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee himself — in whose case,Bose magnanimously declared that there was “no time limit” for the chief minister.

Fair trade?
As Front leaders get busy wooing voters in their constituencies in view of the coming polls,Minister for fire services Pratim Chatterjee appear more interested in exploring his talent for literature and films. The minister has written around 15 collections of poems and acted in some films. And grapevine has it that he issued the No Objection Certificate for the 33rd Kolkata Book Fair only after a collection of his poems was released there.

Land ahoy!
It is for sure that the land acquisition fiasco has left a bad taste in the mouth of Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee who now seems to be relying on Sunderban Affairs minister Kanti Ganguly for land requirements. At the recent inauguration of an optical clinic in the city,Sankar Netralaya, the CM claimed that when he was approached by the organisation for land for the nursing home,he called up Ganguly and a plot in Mukundupur was arranged for. The minister may come to the rescue a second time as well. During the ceremony, when the nursing home authorities mentioned that they would need more land for future expansions, the CM said: “Last time, all I had to do was call up Kanti Ganguly. This time too,I am sure he will be able to arrange for more.”

Trouble in paradise
When it comes to criticising the state government and the Chief Minister,Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee,Mamata Banerjee does not leave a stone unturned. Lately, she has begun finding fault with Bhattacharjee’s regular visits to Nandan. The Chief Minister, who is also the in-charge of the Information and Cultural Affairs Department,is regular there and he reportedly finds these visits relaxing. “I don’t know whether I should say this or not,but the Chief Minister is getting free entertainment at Nandan. He is seeking enjoyment at the government’s cost while the people of the state suffer,” Banerjee has thundered.

Mind your language
Gorkha Janamukti Morcha president Bimal Gurung’s address to the media in Nepali after walking out of the meeting with chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee left many a reporter red-faced. Comprising mostly Bengalis, the media had been waiting for over two hours, first for the Morcha delegation’s arrival and then the results of the meeting. Gurung’s justification was that he was pointing out the differences in language, looks, traditional dress. But that didn’t go down well. A senior reporter remarked: “The dispute is between them and the state government. Why try to ethnicise the issue among the media? We are here to understand what both sides are saying and report the same in a free and fair manner.”
