Didi sees green pastures
After lending support to farmers movement against land acquisition,Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee has now taken a step further by linking it to the cows. Yes,the bovine animals who cant demonstrate, agitate on roads or go on a hunger strike. Speaking in Singur the same place from where her agitation forced the Tatas to shit its small car factory Mamata chose to express her concern that cows too are suffering because of land accquisitions carried out by the CPM government. She pointed out that cows in Rajarhat are staying unfed for months due to scarcity of land and grass in the area. The cows of Rajarhat are becoming thinner as they do not have a small piece of land to graze. The CPM have forced more than 10 lakh people to move from their lands. The land owners have become beggars today. The domestic animals of the area also stand helplessly as they do not have any place where they can have a some grass to eat.
Guru shown red card
Syed Nayeemuddin, the only Dronacharya Award winner in Indian football, now has the dubious distinction of having one of the shortest stints as a coach in Maidan. Mohammedan Sporting fired him within three months of hiring him as their head coach. His stint saw the footballers devoting more time in sand training and high altitude training which was conducted in the hills of Darjeeling. Sessions with the ball, however, were few and far between. After the club went down to East Bengal 5-0 in the Calcutta Football League and subsequently failed to qualify for the Federation Cup main round,Nayeemuddin was shown the door. While the ace coach hit out at the club officials saying that he had been betrayed from all quarters, club president Sultan Ahmed rubbished his allegations. Even after three months,he didnt know the names of all the players, said Ahmed. Nayeems methods have become too dated to be successful, believes the Maidan.
Foot soldiers of Mamata
Sovan Chatterjee, who completed 100 days as the Mayor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation this week, got stuck in a traffic jam while returning from north Bengal to his office on thursday for a scheduled meeting with Union Minister of State for Urban Development Sougata Mukherjee. Not ready to wait for the traffic to get cleared, the Mayor left his car and headed off towards the nearest metro station,Girish Park. He stood in a queue to buy tickets and then boarded a train. The train was packed to the brim, but some passengers recognised him and offered him a seat. The Mayor was asked repeatedly what he was going to tell the Railway Minister Mamata Banerjees about the long, serpentine queue in front of the ticket counters, half of which remain closed, and about the crowded compartments, now that he has seen it himself?
But like an astute politician,he saw an opportunity to use it to his advantage by saying: I was so overwhelmed to see about 350 people standing in queues in front of the ticket counter. The train was so crowded that it was difficult to stand. All these show the enormous extent to which the Metro has become popular among the people. It was not like this before. Didi will be so happy to know this.
Kshitis USP in tough times
RSP leader Kshiti Goswami now faces the heat following the disclosure of largescale nepotism in his PWD department. A section of Left Front leaders privately confide that the firebrand minister, who opposed the industrialisation and the joint operation against the Maoists in Lalgarh, will be now busy tackling the allegations against him. An RSP leader said,he would not have to face criticism from other Left leaders because he can forge a compromise formula with his opponents. This is his uniqueness, said a senior RSP leader.
