Movie magic Marxists
The Marxists have come up with a feature film to counter Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjees allegations on governments highhandedness in Singur and Nandigram. Earlier the CPM had produced several audio-video CDs,with speeches of veteran Jyoti Basu and circulated those throughout the state. But this time the party has roped in tinsel word heroes like Saumitra Chatterjee and Sabyasachi Cakrabarty to act in the film. Shyamal Chakraborty, state president of CITU,was in-charge of producing the film, which will be released after April 16,the day Higher Secondary examinations get over. Party committees have been asked to collect CDs of the film and show them in rural video centers.
Queued up for money
Last week passers-by in front of the Reserve Bank of India got inquisitive as they saw slithering queues to a counter inside. Upon inquiry it was found that the queues were for the new 10-rupee coin introduced by the RBI. The craze soon went overboard and the coins began to be sold in black market. A box of 10 such coins, for instance, was sold for Rs 130. Soon policemen on duty at the Writers Buildings Gate No 6,which is bang opposite the RBI,were seen leaving their posts and joining the queues.
Leftist extension
Speculations are rife at the Writers Buildings that the present DGP A B Vohra, whose tenure is ending on April 30,will get an extension for another month provided the Election Commission agrees. In fact, the state government, which is keen on getting the Lok Sabha elections through with Vohra at the helm, has reportedly recommended to the EC for the one-month extension for the top police officer, known for his unflinching loyalty to the ruling Marxists. The entire ball now is in the court of the EC.
Gorkha bind
With heavyweight candidate Jaswant Singh filing his nomination from Darjeeling, the moribund West Bengal unit of the BJP seemed to have a got a new lease of life and a flurry of activities are seen at the state unit office at Muralidhar Sen Lane in central Kolkata. The office-bearers were seen gathering details about the Darjeeling constituency. However,at Darjeeling where Singh is now staying no senior leader, except state party general secretary Shamik Bhattacharya, was seen. In fact, all the senior leaders, including state BJP president Satyabrata Mukherjee, former union minister Tapan Sikder, general secretary Rahul Sinha, former state president Tathagata Roy,seem to stay away from Singh, who is fighting the elections with support from the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha. The Morcha, incidentally,is spearheading the movement for a separate state of Gorkhaland and the state BJP brass has already openly declared its opposition to Gorkhaland.
