Kolkata: Brothers have narrow escape after rival gang shoots at them in Tiljala

Both groups were longstanding rivals and were fighting over territory, though the exact subject of their argument is yet to be confirmed.

Two brothers had a close shave when a rival group fired two bullets at them in a suspected turf war at Tiljala late Wednesday, the third such incident in the past two months, and the second one this week.

According to the police, the incident took place in a busy neighbourhood along Tiljala Road at around 11.35 pm. Rabi Das (21), a resident of the area, along with his associates identified as Sheikh Irfan Ali (21) of Palm Avenue, Sheikh Ansar Ali alias Ninaz (30) of Tiljala Masjid Bari lane, Kartick Chowdhury and Nadim, got involved in an altercation with Amit Roy alias Tinku (27) and his elder brother Rajesh Roy alias Polu (32).

Both groups were longstanding rivals and were fighting over territory, though the exact subject of their argument is yet to be confirmed, said police.

Tempers ran high and a member of Rabi’s group fired two rounds at the brothers. However, Polu and Tinku ducked, after which their rivals tried to flee. Plain-clothed officers of the anti-crime department were on night duty in the area.

The officers chased the miscreants and managed to nab Rabi, Ali and Ansar from Lalmath near Sridhar Roy Road. Two improvised firearms, ten rounds of live cartridges and one bullet head were recovered from them.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (East Suburban Division) Gaurav Sharma said a case has been registered under Sections 341 (wrongful restraint), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 397 (robbery) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code, and under sections of the Arms Act.

The incident triggered panic among the area’s residents. Locals said gang wars were becoming more frequent in their neighbourhood. A resident of the area, who did not wish to be named, said, “We stay indoors after the sun sets as the situation here is not very peaceful.”
On Tuesday, a gang in Karaya area shot at a rival gang after an objectionable comment was allegedly passed about a woman who was close to one of its members.

The anti-rowdy squad of the detective department had arrested three people in connection with the incident the next day. On September 8, two youths were shot at in an under-construction building in Tiljala by a gang of four from the roof of an adjacent building following a fallout between syndicates involved in supplying construction materials.
