The recruitment of 10,000 Junglemahal youths as special police constables may not be a legally tenable proposition, the state government has been told after the process to accept applications for these posts was initiated recently in West Midnapore,Bankura and Purulia districts.
The recruitment process has been put on hold after a section of central government bureaucrats objected to the state government policy. A senior official said,We have received objections from a section of the bureaucracy of the Central Home ministry regarding the recruitment process. They have communicated that jobs cannot be created for a particular region. We have apprised the chief minister about it and the recruitment process has been held up temporarily.
However,P K Sahay,DG,Home Guards, when asked, said,As of now,no written submission has been made from any quarters regarding the recruitment process and the recruitment drive is on.
Despite the Maoists threat,an advertisement was published in Bengali dailies inviting applications for the posts and the state government offices started receiving applications for it.
According to official sources,in the last one month after the advertisement was published,Bankura police have received 2,500 applications and West Midnapore and Purulia received 1,500 applications each for the post of home guards.
Although,in the cabinet,it was decided that of the 10,000 posts,1200 will be recruited as home guards and 8000 as National Volunteer Force (NVF),the police administrations in these three districts have received thousands of applications forms while the Kalyani office of NVF received around 5000 applications for the NVF posts. Significantly, the CPI(Maoists) and the pro-naxalite organisations protested vehemently after the CM Mamata Banerjee announced that tribal youths will be recruited as special police constables. After the state government initiated the recruitment process, the Maoists started threatening the youths asking them not to file any application for it.
