Kolkata Police said on Wednesday that it is yet to question the principal of La Martiniere for Boys School,a day after he expressed regret for caning a 13-year-old student who allegedly committed suicide. Deputy Commissioner of Kolkata Police,Damayanti Sen,said the police had talked to the family of Rouvanjit Rawla,but not yet questioned the principal Sunirmal Chakraborty,who admitted that caning the student was a mistake and was ready to face the consequences. “An investigation is on and the complainant has to be examined…we are proceeding with the inputs,” she said.

‘Worms in HC tap water’
The Bar Association of the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday sought intervention of the High Court Administration on the supply of contaminated water. Vice-President of the Bar Association Sukhendu Sekhar Roy alleged that worms have been found in the tap water of the High Court Building today. He displayed the water in a bottle. Roy said that advocate Shri Chakraborty fell sick after drinking the water. The overhead tanks of the High Court building do not have any cover and are exposed to dust and waste of birds. However,the administration has not yet initiated any action for supplying purified drinking water.

17 V-Cs meet Governor
In an attempt to improve the standard of higher education in Bengal,vice-chancellors of 17 universities on Wednesday met Governor M K Naryanan. In a meeting that lasted over six hours — from 11 to 5 pm — the governor discussed issues like increasing the number of seats in colleges across the state and improving the quality of higher education and make it more accessible in West Bengal.
