IIT Kharagpur bioscience student ‘dies by suicide’

Institute says 'devastated', 'fully cooperating' with police investigation

IIT KharagpurAccording to the institute, the student was an academically gifted student, known for her dedication. She had a promising future in the field of biosciences and biotechnology, the institute said.

A third-year woman student at IIT Kharagpur has died by suicide, the institute said on Monday. The student, Devika Pillai, hailed from Kerala and was studying bioscience and biotechnology.

The body was found in her hostel premises this morning, and has been sent to Kharagpur sub-divisional hospital for post-mortem.

“Upon discovery of the incident, the campus security and medical teams were immediately alerted. District police authorities have been informed. Her family has also been informed. The police are conducting a thorough investigation… the institute is fully cooperating with the authorities,” IIT-KGP said a statement.

According to the institute, Pillai was an academically gifted student, known for her dedication. She had a promising future in the field of biosciences and biotechnology, the institute said.

“She was General Secretary, Social and Cultural, Sarojini Naidu/Indira Gandhi Hall. She was pursuing a summer internship under a professor in-charge, Department of Bioscience and Biotechnology. The institute is devastated by this tragic event,” it said.

“We are in close contact with her family and are providing all necessary assistance to help them through this incredibly difficult time,” it said.
