Wanted Maoist held from Jhargram

A Maoist ultra,wanted in several murder cases,was arrested in West Midnapore district on Friday morning. “Khokon Mahto,a squad member,was wanted in several murder cases,including that of three persons on August 27 last year when Umakanta Mahato was killed in an encounter with the joint forces,” said Jhargram SDPO Rashid Munir Khan. Meanwhile,two PCPA activists were also arrested along with Khokon but for no Maoist connection. Nakul Mahto and Shyamal Roy alias Jumbo were arrested on the charge of domestic violence.

Police deny spurious liquor deaths

The police have denied that the four residents of Salt Lake’s Dattabad slum who died on Friday,had consumed spurious liquor — a claim made by the Bidhannagar Municipality.

Samar Budhuk (24) and Swapan Das (48) had died at the Bidhannagar Hospital and Tarkeswar Nath (28) and Sanjay Hazmi had died at the Maniktala ESI Hospital. The bodies of Nath and Hazmi have been sent for postmortem.

Fresh leads in Baguihati murder

The police claimed to have found more evidence against the two brothers accused of killing a 10-year-old child in Baguihati area for plucking flowers from their house garden on Tuesday. Although the duo — Arvind Gharar and Vivek Gharar — were produced in Barasat court on Thursday and sent for 10 days’ police custody,police claimed to have got more scientific evidence in the case.
