I see only death in front of me: brother

“I see only death in front of me. I have only tears,no words. Memories of my brother are crowding my mind. I can’t say anything more at this moment,” said Chiraranjan Chakraborty,the elder brother of Subhas and a former Indian Air Force officer.

The house,Matrichhaya at 182,Private Road,which was built by Subhas’s father in 1952,was on Monday teeming with people who had gathered at the place where he last came about 20 days ago. “Earlier,he used to come here every third day. He would have food and mingle with the people. He stood by whoever was in distress. But later,the visits became less frequent,” Amulya Ranjan Roy,a family friend,said.

A pall of gloom descended on Private Road and Motijheel where Chakraborty spent his youth participating in student politics. A student of Krishna Kumar Hindu Academy and Motijheel College where he was general secretary,Chakrabarty made his mark here during several popular agitations.

“As a student leader,he used to help others a lot. If a student was unable to pay his fees,he would arrange for the same,” Partha Paul,a neighbour,said.

The body of the departed leader will be first brought here at Matrichhaya and then taken to CPM zonal committee office at Nagerbazar and Motijheel College to enable locals to pay their last respects. All shops and markets in the area will remain closed and auto-rickshaw services between Dum Dum station and Airport will be suspended as a mark of respect to the departed leader.
