A day after he revolted against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, calling her a dictator, and criticised his senior Cabinet and party colleague Manas Bhunia, minister of state for food processing Manoj Chakrabarty claimed on Wednesday that whatever he had said on Tuesday was at the behest of his party leadership.

Speaking to The Indian Express over phone from Baharampur, his hometown,Chakrabarty claimed to have the blessings of party’s central leadership.

“It’s not as if I lost cool all of a sudden and said all those things against the CM and Cabinet colleague. I have got the blessings of our party leadership. I am not at all repentant. I was pushed to the wall and could not tolerate insults. I talked to my leaders,Pranab Mukherjee and Adhir Chowdhury, and sent fax messages to party president Sonia Gandhi. As soon as I get her permission,I will put the date on my resignation and send it to the CM,” Chakrabarty, who had been MLA from Baharampur, said.

Chakrabarty,58,joined the Chhatra Parishad, the Congress’ students wing,at the age of 16. After remaining a councillor of the Baharampur municipality for 10 years,he became an MLA in 2006 and was re-elected in 2011.

He was initially made minister of state, parliamentary affairs, under TMC’s Partha Chatterjee. He complained that Chatterjee was not sending him files and was then given the portfolio of small and medium enterprises with Manas Bhunia as minister with independent charge.
