The CPM on Sunday suspended seven-time MP from Arambagh,Anil Basu, from the party for three months, citing charges of corruption and anti-party activities. The decision was taken at the meeting of the partys state committee held in Kolkata.
Basu, who is the former CPM Hooghly district committee secretary,is the first big leader who has been suspended after the partys debacle in the last Assembly elections. The Hooghly district committee had earlier reccommended penal action against the former MP. The party also sent a showcause notice to another Hooghly district committee member Benoy Dutta on the same charges.
Basu was suspended because he did not follow partys constitution religiously, CPM state secretariat member Rabin Dev told The Indian Express after the meeting.
Basu, who triggered a controversy after reportedly making lewd comments against Mamata Banerjee during the run-up to the Assembly elections, was furious when informed about the partys decision. However,he refused to comment. I got to know from you about such things. Why are they not telling me? They should have communicated to me first. However,I will make comments only when I will be told about the partys decision, Basu told The Indian Express.
Last year,Basu had issued an apology for his remarks against Mamata following widespread public condemnation and a severe censure from the party.
