A minor fire broke out in the anti-chamber of the Mayor’s office today at 4.30 pm in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC).

The fire broke out because of a short circuit caused in the two air conditioning machines of that room. Mayor Sovan Chatterjee was not present at the office today,as he has gone to Delhi for three days.

“The mayor’s office and secretariat were engulfed in thick fumes for some time. Thankfully, the accident took place in the office hours, when people were around to help. Otherwise it could have been serious,” said Arnab Roy,Commissioner of the KMC. “The incident, however, proved one thing — that the KMC is equipped to handle accidents like these,” Roy added. The corporation employees acted promptly and extinguished the fire within 15 minutes. Two fire engines reached within half-an-hour,but by that time the fire had been subsided.

Member Mayor-in-Council (Road and Engineering) Bobby Hakim, meanwhile, said: “We will order a thorough probe . Wiring of the entire KMC building will be checked.”
