Mamata Banerjee had her wish fulfilled as the Election Commission of India, which had sought 86 IAS officers for deployment as observers in other states and invited the Chief Minister’s wrath, has settled down for 53 officers. The IAS officers are at present undergoing training in batches in Delhi.
Mamata, who always rues the dearth of IAS officials in the state, was surprised when the ECI asked for 86 IAS officials for poll duty.
When the state government sent a list of 45 officials, the ECI stuck to its demand. The state government then sent it a list of 65 officials.
In West Bengal, 220 IAS officials are working as of now as against the requirement of 250. After she came to power, Mamata has written to the Centre on at least two occasions seeking allotment of more IAS officials for the state.
The state government has even started a coaching centre at the state-run Administrative Training Institute at Salt Lake for IAS aspirants.
So far as WBCS officials are concerned, the state government has sent a list of 47 officials of which the ECI has settled for only 32.
