The CPM today threatened to launch a campaign against the Election Commission for its alleged partiality towards the Trinamool Congress. CPM state secretariat member Rabin Deb handed over the partys complaint to CEO Sunil Gupta, alleging that the Khejuri and Marichda police stations harassed a CPM activist and homeless people belonging to the CPM camp.
Deb said the police deliberately arrested the CPM activist in the name of executing a non-bailable arrest warrant, but did not take steps against Trinamool Congress activists. The Trinamool obstructed a CPM rally in Nandigram and Khejuri, but the police remained silent,he alleged.
Gupta said he had contacted the DM and SP of East Midnapore on this issue, and the CEOs office would look into the allegations.
This is not the first time CPM leaders have alleged that the EC is favouring the Trinamool. N K Sahana, special officer of the CEO,said that it proved the EC was active in the state. On the other hand,Gupta said he received a report from the district administration on the Jamuria incident,in which a local Trinamool leader was killed on Monday. The CEOs office has forwarded the report to the EC with its observations. Gupta hinted that the police were at fault, saying one police official had been suspended.
Gupta also said that deputy election commissioner Vinod Zutshi would be in Bengal between April 10 and 12 to supervise the first and second phases of polling on April 18 and April 23.
