Senior CPM leader and former chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Sunday expressed his doubt whether panchayat elections the first phase of polling is just 10 days away would at all take place.
The State Election Commission is moving Supreme Court. Now,nobody knows whether the election will take place, Bhattacharjee said at an election rally in Burdwan as he pointed to the poll panels dissatisfaction over the state governments reluctance to deploy more forces in the state amid frequent political violence.
In fact, the (ruling) Trinamool Congress is not keen on holding the elections for they know that if free and fair elections are held they will cut a very sorry figure, Bhattacharjee added.
The former chief minister also compared the Trinamool Congress government with the Congress government led by Siddhartha Shankar Ray in 1972 and said that as Rays alleged efforts to stymie the Left Front ended in a fiasco, the efforts made by Mamata Banerjees government too would meet the same fate.
In 1972,the government of SS Ray tried to do the same thing muzzle the voice of the opposition. But ultimately they had to go and the Left Front came to power in 1977. The same thing will happen now. We will first sweep the panchayat polls and thereafter we will stage a comeback, Bhattacharjee said referring to the alleged attacks on CPM cadres and candidates all over the state.
He also said that CPM candidates, who were prevented from filing nominations, will do it again at any cost. We will not sit idle. In Burdwan,1,000 candidates from our party could not file nominations. But they will again go to the commission saying they would have to be allowed to contest.
