SENIOR CPM leaders Ashok Bhattacharya and Jibesh Sarkar, who were detained in Siliguri in connection with the alleged attack on a Trinamool Congress procession, were released on Thursday.

Police said the two leaders were detained for “their own protection as a mob of Trinamool Congress and CPM workers clashed”.

Bhattacharya, who was urban development minister in the previous Left Front government, said,“I have been released today and the police apologised. But they have arrested 52 of our party members including a former MP. They have been produced in the court today. Moreover, police did not explain why we were taken to the police station yesterday night and made spend a night in the lock up. We are contemplating legal action.”

A policeman and three journalists were among those injured in the clash.

The clash ensued when glass bottles filled with liquid were allegedly thrown at the procession from the CPM office.
