A criminal defamation case was Monday filed in a Burdwan district court against Trinamool Congress general secretary Mukul Roy for alleged defamatory comments made by him against a slain CPM leader. The case was filed by Shefali Sarkar,widow of former Barabani MLA Dilip Sarkar,in the court of additional chief judicial magistrate,Asansol. Dilip (65),was shot by four motorcycle-borne assailants near Asansol on June 9. The CPM blamed Trinamool Congress for the murder,and Roy,while denying the accusation at a press conference in Kolkata on the same day,allegedly made some defamatory statements.
Mass sterilization: Probe demanded
A human rights organisation has moved the Calcutta High Court demanding an inquiry into the mass sterilization of women by some government doctors at a rural health centre in Malda. The organisation,MASUM, in a PIL filed on Monday,has alleged that the sterilization procedures adopted did not follow guidelines framed under the National Rural Health Mission of the Central government. The MASUM has alleged that four doctors at Manikchak Rural Health Centre on February 5 performed sterilization operation on 103 women in a matter of few hours. The doctors further violated guidelines by making several women rest in the adjoining field after the operation citing lack of space. No doctor or nurse were present to attend upon the patients ,the PIL reads.
Set up anti-ragging panel: HC to state
The Calcutta High Court Monday directed the state to constitute a committee as per the guideline prescribed by the UGC to look into and curb the cases of ragging in schools and colleges. The directive came while hearing a PIL moved by advocate Tapash Bhanja alleging that the state government was yet to set up the committee as per the UGC directives.
Left Front protests against price rise
Continuing with its protests against rising prices,the Left Front Monday formed human chains at 15 spots across Kolkata,including Entally,Behala,Tollygunge,Garden Reach and Shyambazar. The campaign started at 3 pm and continued till 7 pm, said Rabin Deb,state secretariat member of the CPM. Irrespective of BPL and APL,all poor families should be given 35 kg of rice at Rs 2 per kg, Deb said.
Man surrenders after killing brother-in-law
A man surrendered to police after allegedly killing his brother-in-law for having illicit relation with his wife at Lolitagori in Howrah district,police said. Sk Hidyatullah killed his brother-in-law Sk Zakir Hossain (26) with a sharp weapon for having illicit relation with his wife in his house Sunday night. After the incident,Hidyatullah surendered to local police.
