Three days after at least two deer were killed at Bethuadahari wildlife sanctuary in Nadia, the divisional forest officer of Nadia and Murshidabad and the forest ranger of Krishnagar were suspended on Saturday.

The decision to suspend the officers came after the state Forest minister Hiten Burman and principal chief conservator of Forest Atanu Raha,West Bengal, visited the sanctuary. Moreover, the government has also divided the sanctuary

into the core area and buffer area like in Sundarbans forest.

The deers reportedly died after they were scared by the visitors at the Bethuadahari Wildlife Sanctuary on August 30. The incident happened despite the presence of 23 guards at seven points in the sanctuary. Meanwhile, there were different reports emerging on the number of the deer deaths. According to sources, the autopsy report revealed the deer died due to cardiac arrest.

Today,S N Pal,DFO and Ranger J P Guha Roy were suspended by the state government and departmental actions have been initiated against them for dereliction of duty. Raha said,“Apart from suspending two of the senior forest officers,we have also taken some decisions on the management of the sanctuary.”

We have also put some restriction on tourists. The tourists cannot visit beyond the buffer zone. Moreover, the number of tourists at one time visiting the sanctuary will also be controlled and the tourists will also walk through a guided path.”
