In a state where opposition parties alleged torture and harassment by CPM cadres, the ruling Marxist on Wednesday knocked the door of the Election Commission (EC) complaining that the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) was not allowing them to campaign in the three hill sub-divisions of Darjeeling.

Following a meeting of Left Front partners at Alimuddin Street headquarters of the CPM,chairman of the Front Biman Bose said his party has written to the EC for action.

According to Bose, while CPM cadres are not being allowed

to campaign in Kalimpong,Kurseong and Darjeeling sub-divisions,GJM activists are canvassing freely for BJP candidate Jaswant Singh.

“I do not know why the EC is not taking any action. It is the

responsibility of the EC to hold free and fair elections in the area,” said Bose.

Sources in the Left Front said that Front leaders discussed the issue after CPM politburo member Sitaram Yechury’s meeting in the Hills evoked lukewarm response with only a few party workers turning up at the event.

For the past one year the state government has allowed the GJM to run their writ in the three hill sub-divisions. “Today we are saying that the EC should take action, but it was evident that the state administration also failed to maintain law and order in the region,” said a senior leader of the Left Front.

Bose also accused the opposition parties, including Congress and Trinamool Congress,of intimidating people and trying to divide the state.

“Trinamool Congress,Congress,Maoists and Jharkhandi parties are intimidating people in western districts bordering Jharkhand,” Bose told mediapersons.

Bose, who is also the CPM state secretary, claimed that the situation in Purulia,Bankura,West Midnapore and Darjeeling districts were not conducive for free and fair polls. (With PTI inputs)
