Continue peace process in Jungelmahal: Mamata to interlocutors

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday directed the interlocutors to continue with the peace process in Junglemahal.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday directed the interlocutors to continue with the peace process in Junglemahal.

After a two-hour-long meeting between the Chief Minister and the six-member team of government-appointed interlocutors at the state secretariat,Sujato Bhadra, the leader of the team said the interlocutors were directed by the government to continue the peace talks with Maoists.

Sujato Bhadra said,“We were asked by the CM to continue with the peace talk. And our letter asking for release from the responsibility of being the interlocutors has been rejected by the CM.”

Significantly, the team of interlocutors sent a letter to the Chief Minister a couple of days ago after the joint forces had begun full-fledged operations in Purulia in which two Maoists squad members were shot dead. Meanwhile,in a statement from CPI(Maoists),ultra group’s state secretary Akash has stated that the period of peace talk is over for them and if the government further wants to proceed with talks,it will have to give a written assurance of suspending the operations of security forces in Junglemahal.

However,Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has refused to give any such written assurance to Maoists. According to sources,Banerjee is said to have told the interlocutors that it is not possible for the state government to give any written assurance to an outlawed extremist group.

Moreover,Banerjee has cleared her stand on the issue by saying that if the Maoists try to obstruct the development process in Junglemahal, the government will resist them by using its machinery, added the source.

Defending the government position regarding the charges of violating the pre-conditions of the peace talks including security operations, starting inquiry in the encounter deaths during the Left regime, the Chief Minister is said to have told the interlocutors that Maoists have also deviated from their promise by creating hindrance in the development work in the region.
