Conquering cancer

He is one among those who battled cancer valiantly and came up trumps. And the triumph inspired him to set up a counselling and yoga centre to provide relief to thousands suffering from the disease.

It was on December 21,2001,shortly after his 40th birthday, that Vijay Bhat had two cancerous tumours removed from his colon. As with every body, the ‘C’ word brought with it shock and despair for him and his family. Vijay was at the height of his international career with a leading advertising agency then. Based in London with his wife Nilima and two young children,he suddenly became incapable of taking any major decisions.

But being among life’s winners,it did not take long for Vijay and Nilima to collect themselves and face the crisis head-on. They quickly realised that lifestyle and attitude change were as important as drugs and surgery.

Post-surgery,Vijay choose an integrative medicine approach, carefully combining Chinese medicine, diet, exercise, meditation and positive thinking. He successfully crossed the 5-year cancer-free mark in 2006 and the 10-year mark in 2011.

Now fit and fine,Vijay along the way also made fundamental changes in his priorities. He slowly disengaged himself from his corporate career and returned home to India in 2004 to set up a consulting firm called ‘Roots & Wings.’ In this organisation, various psycho-spiritual tools such as neurolinguistic programming, yoga and other techniques such as family constellation therapy, art and drama therapy, are offered present to give mental relief to those suffering from cancer. Both husband-wife duo have dedicated themselves to help people navigate through major transitions in their lives, including illnesses.

Today, they touch thousands of lives through a website — http://www.cancerawakens.com — that highlights the transformational opportunity the disease presents if one takes a holistic approach. They also run Sampurnah,an integrative medicine clinic at Whitefield,Bangalore, which offers retreats as well as one-on-one coaching to triumph over cancer.
