West Bengal Pradesh Congress leaders met Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi on Monday and urged him to call an all-party meeting over post-poll clashes in Bengal. Alleging that the state government has failed to maintain law and order, the Congress warned that if violence continued, the state may head towards a civil war. Interestingly, the Congress leaders met the Governor just before their alliance partner Mamata Banerjee visited the Raj Bhavan.
Violence is spreading across Bengal. There is no coordination among the agencies of the state administration on the issue, said Pradip Bhattacharjee, working president of the WBPCC.
Four MPs,17 MLAs and WBPCC leaders, including Bhattacharjee and Manas Bhuniya, leader of the Congress Legislative Party, submitted a memorandum to Gandhi on the violence in Bengal.
The leaders later told the media that they would submit a report on the large-scale violence and terror unleashed by the CPM to the Centre. Pranab da (Pranab Mukherjee) has called a core committee meeting of our party in Delhi on Tuesday and we will give him a detailed report that he will submit to the Union government, Bhuniya said before leaving for Delhi.
The Congress also lambasted the police for their indifference. The police are completely inactive as violence rages on in various districts. The policemen are lathicharging innocent people and protestors. Many of our party supporters have been injured, said Bhuniya.
The leaders claimed that arms and ammunitions are being stockpiled in Bengal and the administration is not taking steps to recover them. Recently we have seen huge stockpiles of arms seized from homes of CPM leaders in various areas like Nandigram and Khejuri, said Bhattacharjee.
Regarding Lalgarh, the Congress demanded that the police should raid the residences of CPM leaders. In Jangal Mahal, the police should immediately raid the residences of CPM leaders, who have stockpiled arms and ammunition to unleash terror on people and our party supporters, said Bhuniya.
