While the Congress high command has given its green signal for sending party representatives to attend the Trinamool Congress’s martyr’s day rally to be held by Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday, some of the dissident Left leaders have also decided to be present on the dais and officially join the TMC.

Notable among them is Hiten Barman, the Forward Bloc MP from Coochbehar who was denied ticket this time.

Politically more significant, however,is the official participation of the Congress in the July 21 commemorative rally.

The martyr’s day has been observed by the Congress and TMC separately since 1996 to pay tribute to 13 youth Congress workers who were killed in a police firing on this day in 1993. Banerjee was then the chief of the state Youth Congress.

For the first time,Banerjee has invited the Congress to address the rally being organised by the TMC. K Keshav Rao,AICC member in-charge of West Bengal, will attend the rally along with Asit Mal,a Congress MLA.

The rally,to be held at Esplanade in the heart of the city,is expected to be attended by a record crowd this year given the Trinamool’s good showing in the polls.

“We did not organise any victory celebration after the polls. We will mark July 21 as the celebration day. We are making arrangements to make it a memorable occasion. Banerjee has already invited Subrata Mukherjee to share the dais with her,” said a senior leader of the TMC.
