In a strong message to the dissidents in Congress,a day before Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi is set to start election campaign in West Bengal, the state unit of the party on Tuesday suspended 12 of its members — that includes three sitting MLAs — who are contesting elections as Independents against official Congress and Trinamool Congress candidates.

“ We have suspended 12 party workers and if they don’t mend their ways they will be expelled,” said Shakeel Ahmed,AICC observer for West Bengal.

Ahmed said that these candidates are contesting the elections as Independents in the first and second phase of the election.

“Obviously we have taken the decision with a heavy heart .These Congress workers were involved with the party for many years. We have taken the decision to maintain discipline in the party,” Ahmed said.

The three sitting MLAs who have been suspended are Chittaranjan Roy from Hemtabad, Hamidur Rehman from Chopra and Fazle Haque from Dinhata. All the three had filed nominations as Independents. Both Rehman and Roy are considered close to Congress MP Deepa Dasmunsi.

Others who feature in the suspension list are Kanailal Agarwal, chairman of Islampur Municipality,Shehnaz Quadery niece of A H Khan Chowdhury, the Malda district party president and Al Beruni,Malda Zilla parishad member who has filed his nomination from Malatipur as an Independent.
