Alipore zoo union postpones stir till Puja

Kolkata: The employees union of Alipur Zoo on Tuesday assured the committee set up by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to look into the grievances of the zoo workers so that they do not indulge into agitation on zoo premises till the commencement of Durga Puja on October 2.

The committee comprising four ministers discussed the situation with the INTUC-led employees’ union on Tuesday. The ministers who are part of the committee are Subrata Mukherejee, minister for Public Health Engineering,Manas Bhunia, minister for Irrigation,Hiten Burman, minister for Forests and Firhad Hakim, minister for Urban Development.

The ongoing tussle between the union and the Deputy Director of Alipore Zoo Piyali Chatterje has allegedly also led to neglect of the animals. The committee set up in the last week of August would recommend the steps for restoration of the normalcy and development of the zoo. The zoo employs 150 permanent employees and 350 on contract with private agencies. “The employees would maintain normalcy on premises,” said employees’ union member.
