Mamata govt to pursue Muslim reservation
The state government told Calcutta High Court that it would continue with the policy of ten per cent reservation for Muslims in government jobs,which was announced by the previous Left Front government. The government also stated that it would not be possible for West Bengal Commission for Backward Class to re-examine the process of identifying Muslim castes as backward class. This after the Division Bench of Chief Justice Jaynarayan Patel and Justice Ashim Kumar,which is hearing a PIL challenging Muslim reservation,wanted to know on July 8 from the state government whether the West Bengal Commission for Backward Class could re-examine and reconsider the process of identifying Muslim castes as backward classs. The court will now hear the case on August 26.
Evicting sex workers from their houses illegal
Cancelling the order passed by the ACJM,Ranaghat,the Calcutta High Court on Friday held that it was not legal to evict sex workers from their house. Sonia Roy,a sex worker was allegedly murdered on May 16 in a house at C R Das Road,Shantipur,in the Nadia district where hundreds of sex workers resided in rented houses. When the murder case reached the ACJM court,the magistrate passed a suo-motu order directing the police to pick up those sex workers residing there and produce them in the court. Challenging the order of the ACJM court,one Bela Bibi filed a petition in the High Court.
Greater Cooch Behar leader files bail plea
Banshi Badan Burman,one of the senior leaders of Greater Cooch Behar movement who is waiting release as political prisoner from jail,on Friday moved a bail petition in the Calcutta High Court. Sekhar Bose,the counsel of Burman,pleaded that the High Court may grant his bail as the state government has decided to release him as a political prisoner. The Division Bench of Chief Justice Jaynaryan Patel and Justice Ashim Kumar Roy will hear the case on Tuesday.
