On the morning of September 4,1957,when Elizabeth Eckford,an African-American teenager from Little Rock in the US attempted to enter an all white high school, she was redefining the concept of democracy. It was one of the most important events of the African-American Civil Rights Movement which eventually led to a more tolerant America. An America which wouldlater give birth to likes of Josh Kornbluth,an autobiographical monologuist who presented his “live monologue”,Citizen Josh at the American Centre this Wednesday.

Kornbluth, whose body of work comprises mainly solo monologues based closely on events and people his life, his upbringing, and his career, tries to deconstruct the concept of democracy through Citizen Josh.

As Kornbluth takes on the stage and tells us about his everyday experiences, his negotiation with authorities and his troubled relationship with his neighbours,we slowly begin to realise that there is method to this madness. That what Kornbluth is trying to tell us is that democracy doesn’t necessarily have to be about multitudes taking the streets and voicing opinions,it can also be about an individual making a personal decision like Elizabeth Eckford did on that fateful morning.

While narrating the tale of his ill-fated Princeton dissertation which Kornbluth didn’t submit even after 25 years of leaving the hallowed University,Kornbluth touches upon some of the most important events that has shaped present day America— the Little Rock events, the Vietnam War,Ronald Reagan’s term as the American president, the Nixon reign and George Bush Jr’s re-election. He expresses his disillusionment,he talks about hope,he pleads for a more tolerant world-view,all with his tongue firmly in his cheek. Thereby he achieves something very few performers can stake claim to—striking a chord with the audience.
