With the World Cup fever raging through the world,a film festival might seem a waste of time. But if youre an ardent film buff, the 15th EU film Festival is where you can catch a different kind of action. The 10 day-long festival, which begins today, contains 23 contemporary films from countries like Slovenia,Spain Ireland,Italy,Belgium and the UK.
The festival kickstarts with a 2006 Belgian film called The Hell of Tangiers, based on a true story of two bus drivers who are wrongfully imprisoned for smuggling drugs in Morocco. This might not be the best time for a film festival but with a paucity of cultural programmes in the city in summer, there is a fair chance that we might pull in the crowds, says Gerardo Fueyo-Bros,cultural counsellor,Spanish Embassy, which is in charge of the festival.
Among the other films is Spanish drama,La Soledad, portrays how the lives of two single mothers are altered by the Madrid bombings. The 2009 BAFTA Best Documentary-nominated film The Age of Stupid, visualizes the world in 2015,devastated by climate change, and Roosters Breakfast,is a love story between a mechanic and pop star.
There selection also includes award-winning Polish filmmaker Jerzy Antczaks film Chopin Desire for Love, which took 25 years to write, and the critically acclaimed 2001 WW II drama,All the Queens Men about a British surveillance team sent to recover enigma coding machines from the Nazis.
Fueyo-Bros adds that the festival is an effort to provide a glimpse of modern European cinema to Indian audiences. The stories in the films also reveal the cultural and socioeconomic position of Europe, he says. After successful screenings in Goa,Mumbai and Chennai over the past few months,Delhi is the last stop for the festival that ends on June 20. Screenings will be held at Teen Murti auditorium and Indian Habitat Centre. Entry is Free.
