CBI arrests TMC youth leader Ashish Pandey in RG Kar financial irregularities case

The junior doctors association has called a General Body meeting to discuss their next course of action.The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested TMC youth leader Ashish Pandey, a doctor, who is associated with RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, on Thursday evening in connection with a financial irregularities case involving the institution.
On September 2, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, was arrested by the CBI in a graft case along with three others – vendors Biplav Singha (52) and Sumon Hazra (46), and Afsar Ali Khan, who provided additional security to Ghosh.
Additionally, the CBI has arrested Ghosh and Abhijit Mondol, an inspector at Tala police station, in connection with the rape and murder of the junior doctor at the institution. The CBI alleges that both were involved in disturbing the crime scene, tampering with evidence, violating official rules, engaging in criminal conspiracy, and misleading investigators.
Following the incident, the Calcutta High Court transferred both the rape and murder case and the financial irregularities case related to RG Kar to the CBI. Subsequently, the agency interrogated Pandey along with other TMC leaders who are doctors, including Avik Dey and Birupaksha Biswas.
Protesting junior doctors accuse Pandey of fostering a culture of threats at RG Kar and regularly harassing them. The RG Kar disciplinary committee has already summoned Pandey and recorded his statement. Junior doctors had staged a demonstration as he arrived at RG Kar to appear before disciplinary committtee.
According to agitating junior doctors he was part of ruling party backed group in RG Kar medical college who were responsible for ‘threat culture’ . He was also a close aide of the then principal Sandip Ghosh.
On September 10, authorities of R G Kar medical college sent notices to 51 doctors, house staff and interns and barred them from campus and prohibited their participation in college activities. This was after an enquiry committee was set up to probe ‘intimidation’. The notice highlighted, ‘they have been engaging in behavior that promotes a culture of intimidation, endangering the democratic atmosphere of the institution.’ The list, among others, includes 2 senior resident doctors, 1 medical research scientist, 20 house staffs, 11 interns and other medical (MBBS) students. Pandey’s name was foremost in the list.
