Last years films threw up some interesting names that have remained with us as we take on 2010. Deepak Dobriyal,Abhimanyu Singh,Amole Gupte,Chandan Roy Sanyal,Namit Das and many such actors gave powerful performances, often walking away with the heros share of accolades. With the emergence of such unlikely heroes, the old-fashioned concept of casting a hero and a heroine has given way to ensemble casts.
Screen, recognising this emerging trend, has introduced the Best Ensemble Cast category for the Nokia 16th Annual Star Screen Awards and the films nominated in this category include Rakeysh Omprakash Mehras Delhi-6,Anurag Kashyaps Gulaal,Nandita Dass Firaaq,Pankaj Advanis Sankat City and Zoya Akhtars Luck by Chance.
Each of the nominees rightfully deserves to be here since Luck by Chance may not have been as endearing as it was if it werent for its quirky set of characters and,in the case of Firaaq one cannot single out a lead character since it comprises three parallel storylines.
Das is surprised when she is informed of Firaaqs nomination. She is reminded of actor Naseeruddin Shahs comment after the films first screening. Naseerji told me that if someone from Firaaqs cast had to be nominated for the Best Actor Award this year,it wouldnt be possible because the entire cast performed so well that one couldnt be singled out, says the filmmaker, who has recently shifted base to Mumbai. Das adds the new category is a great way to motivate the entire team. Its another way of appreciating the entire casts work and pushing them to do their best.
Mehra gives the credit of the films nomination to the casting director PS Bharthi. Though casting directors have been around for some years now, they came under the spotlight after Danny Boyle acknowledged Loveleen Tandons contribution to the success of Slumdog Millionaire. Its a specialised field and a producer or a director may not have all the knowledge required for it. A casting director can span the country and the world for the right cast as happened with Rang De Basanti and now Delhi-6 . Its a great emerging trend and its an encouraging initiative on behalf of Screen, says Mehra.
