West Bengal has an image problem: UK envoy
British Deputy High Commissioner Sanjay Wadvani said today that the negative image of the state may scare off potential investors from Bengal.

Speaking at an interactive session organised by the Bengal Chamber of Commerce,Wadvani said,“Bengal has an image problem so far as business is concerned”.

“We would like potential investors to choose Bengal and the North-East over cities like Mumbai but the anti-industry image hampers the prospects despite ample opportunities here. We want to get British companies here,” he said,adding education,both at university and vocational level,and automobile sectors were key areas that could attract investments from the UK.

HC asks owners of wetland plots to return land
The Calcutta High Court directed one Nasim Ahmed Siddiqui and three others to return around 0.3 acre land to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation by February 15.

Last year,Nasim and the others had purchased the land that fall under the wetland areas in east Kolkata. The East Kolkata Wetland Management Authority,along with the police,did not allow them to construct buildings at the land. Following this,they filed a petition in the High Court alleging that the authority had illegally obstructed them from carrying out construction work.

On Friday,the state counsel pleaded that the land has been illegally purchased by Nasim and the others. According to the legal provisions of East Kolkata Wetland Management Authority,no one can purchase land which falls in the area earmarked as wetlands. Construction work in such is also banned,the counsel added.
