West Bengal School Education Minister Partha Dey on Monday said in the Assembly that the state government is planning to introduce a system by which every student is promoted to the next class. We are keen to implement the provision of he RTE Act by no student is declared unsuccessful. Even if someone is weak,he should be given remedial classes and should be promoted, said Dey. According to one of the provisions of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act 2009 that came in force in the state from April 1 this year,the students cannot be detained in the same class up to standard VIII or up to 14 years of their age.

American Center attack: SC asks govt to table trial court records
The Supreme Court on Monday asked the West Bengal government to table before it records pertaining to the trial court proceedings of the Kolkata American Centre terror attack case.

A Bench of Justices Dalveer Bhandari and A K Patnaik passed the order after recording an undertaking from the state government that the documents related to the case would be tabled within eight weeks. The apex court had earlier stayed the death sentence of two of the convicts in the case,Aftab Ahmed Ansari and Jamiluddin Nasir,pending the appeal filed by the duo challenging their conviction and sentence. The two men had fired indiscriminately at policemen outside the American Centre on Jawaharlal Nehru Road in Kolkata on the morning of January 22,2002,killing six and injuring 14 others. The Calcutta High Court had upheld the death sentence of Ansari and Nasir.

Maoists quizzed,CID recovers huge cache of arms from Khejuri
Following the interrogating of five Maoists arrested from South 24-Parganas on June 19,the CID has seized a huge cache of arms and ammunition from Khejuri in Nandigram and Bagnan in Howrah. The CID team has seized three arms and ammunition from Khejuri in East Midnapore and explosives from Bagnan in Howrah.

After interrogating the five arrested Maoists,we have recovered arms and ammunition. A 9 mm rifle,two revolvers 15 detonators,15 gelatin stick and two rounds of bullets were recovered, said a senior CID official. The arms had been buried underground.
