BJP leader and former MP Dilip Ghosh, who married party worker Rinku Majumder on Friday, had a low-key birthday celebration at Eco Park in New Town on Saturday.

As usual, Ghosh arrived at the park early in the morning for a walk as party workers waited to wish him. He interacted with the public as well as media persons and had a cup of tea.

‘Payesh’ was arranged by party workers and Ghosh cut his birthday cake with them. “Many leaders celebrate their birthday by hiring a stadium or hotel. I celebrate it under the open sky at 6 am and that is why Dilip Ghosh is Dilip Ghosh,” he said.

Early on Friday morning, his BJP colleagues and rivals in the Trinamool Congress (TMC) began to share birthday wishes. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sent a letter, along with flowers and sweets. TMC leader Kunal Ghosh wished him, while party MLA Madan Mitra said, “I am happy Dilip da is getting married… I would request Dilip da, he should travel now with boudi (Majumder).”

Ghosh and Majumder met in 2021 during their morning walks, and their friendship blossomed over time. Majumder said she proposed marriage to Ghosh in September. He took two months to say yes.

On Friday, it was Majumder who led a procession to the groom’s house. Around 6 pm, she reached Ghosh’s residence at New Town wearing a Banarasi sari in red and pink colour, and gold ornaments. She said she was “thrilled about marrying Ghosh,” adding that “the entire media has its eyes on our marriage”.

Majumder believes that it was her persuasion that made Ghosh even consider marriage. “I made him think about it, probably no one before me had tried that.”

On Saturday, during his morning walk, Ghosh said, “I had said that from the next day (after the wedding), I will join in the party work as usual. I will attend a rally at Dumdum today evening.”

He added, “We have plans to travel somewhere but the place will be finalised by Rinku. After she finalises it, I will go with her.”
