Mira Nair trends after son Zohran Mamdani’s historic NYC mayoral win

Mira Nair’s influence clearly extends beyond cinema. Her storytelling rooted in migration, identity, and resilience seems to have found new expression in her son’s political narrative.

After Zohran Mamdani’s victory in the New York City mayoral polls on Wednesday morning, his mother, acclaimed Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair has been trending online. It wasn’t until Mamdani won the preliminary elections that many people even realised the connection between the newly elected mayor and the celebrated director.

Mamdani’s win is historic, he is the first Muslim and the second-youngest mayor elect of New York City. But what has equally caught people’s attention is the revelation that his mother is Mira Nair, whose films have left a lasting cultural impact across the globe.

From Monsoon Wedding to The Namesake, Nair’s cinema has long captured the essence of Indian identity and the immigrant experience. As social media users rediscovered her filmography, many expressed surprise at the influence she has had not just in global cinema, but now indirectly in American politics.

Bollywood influence meets American politics

Many have said that Nair’s creative sensibilities have shaped Mamdani’s campaign style. Mamdani incorporated cinematic references into his campaign reels and TikToks from classic 1970-1980s Hindi films to iconic moments featuring Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan.

During the primary elections, Mamdani invoked the cinematic legacy of Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, and Kishore Kumar to challenge his opponent, Andrew Cuomo. His campaign video, set to ‘Deewangi Deewangi’ from Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Om Shanti Om’, felt more like a film trailer than a political ad.

The Bollywood-inspired reel went viral among the Indian diaspora, helping him gain traction among ‘desi’ voters abroad. His creative approach and use of cultural familiarity made him instantly relatable to younger and immigrant voters.

Nair, one of the most celebrated Indian filmmakers globally, is the founder of Mirabai Films and is known for directing independent dramas that bridge cultures. She has received two prizes at the Cannes Film Festival, four at the Venice Film Festival, and nominations for two BAFTA and two César Awards.

Her success and worldview have undoubtedly shaped Mamdani’s creative approach to leadership and communication.

A record-breaking election

In the final tally, Democrat Zohran Mamdani won the New York City mayoral election with 948,202 votes (50.6 per cent), with 83 per cent of votes counted. Cuomo secured 776,547 votes (41.3 per cent), while Sliwa garnered 137,030 votes.
