A listless Bengal almost stumbled at the first hurdle but managed a face-saving 1-1 draw in the their quarter-final group league opener against Delhi at the Yuba Bharati Krirangan (YBK) on Friday.

Delhi, after doing all the hard work, should have won the match but paid for their inexperience. They came to this match after four straight wins.

Bengal’s passing wasn’t up to the mark,as there was hardly any penetration upfront. Delhi’s goal in the 40th minute was courtesy a goalkeeping error by Sandip Nandy, who misjudged the flight of a Vikash Rawat cross from the right and Tuishim Mashangva headed home untroubled.

In the second half also,Bengal continued to enjoy possession and created chances. Denson Devadas missed the target in the 71st minute,Jayanta Sen came close in the 78th minute, before Sen finally scored two minutes from time to save the 29-time champions from a shock defeat.

TN top Group B

Tamil Nadu struck twice in the second-half to defeat Mizoram 2-0. The win enabled Tamil Nadu take the lead in Group B with three points, while Mizoram are yet to open their account.

Playing under lights in the second match of the day,Mizoram’s defence was nowhere to be seen as Tamil Nadu scored through CS Sabeeth and Rajesh to win comfortably.
