The severest punishment for students of Blooming Dale School at Madurdaha in east Kolkata is when they are told Look, from tomorrow you will not come to school, says Shramana Mitra,a teacher at the school told The Sunday Express.
These students, all between five and 14 years of age and who have some physical or mental disabilities, dont ever want to miss a single class in the school one among a handful of integrated schools in Kolkata.
Kanungo and nine of her colleagues quit a reputed school of Kolkata to set up this school in November 2011. In that school there was some arrangement for teaching special children, which we thought was not up to the mark and somewhat inadequate. We,therefore, decided to set up Blooming Dale, Mitra, who is teacher-in-charge of the special section, said.
While this school has 25 children, those who need special care are 15.
Shramana, trained in teaching special children has another teacher Madhumita Sengupta to assist her.
Teaching such children requires a lot of patience and affection for these children, who come from various parts of the city.
Punishment is out of the question. We use scientific methods to teach them. Such children need more than parental care. You will have to treat them as your own children, said Mitra .
She also said that while they do charge some money, they give concessions when more than two children come from one family. When we will reach the strength of 225 students,we will make a three per cent reservation for those children who come from BPL families. We are here to render all help we can offer, but we also want to ensure that they receive quality education, Mitra said.
She also said that one good thing that they had observed was that when these special children go to another class, they are not teased by them. There are no sneers. Instead, these children help them. It is a very positive sign, Mitra added.
