Three prisoners escaped from police custody in Dum Dum on Tuesday morning after the van carrying 23 undertrials collided with a truck.

The accident ripped off a portion of the van and left its driver and three other undertrials injured.

According to the police, while the armed constables became busy in rescuing the driver, the trio — Balbir Singh,Ganpat Ram and Manirul Haque — took advantage of the situation and fled the spot.

The undertrials were being ferried from Dum Dum Central Jail to Barrackpore court where they were scheduled to be produced for hearings.

The remaining 17 inmates were produced in the court later in the day. A complaint has been lodged with the airport police station. “We are conducting raids at several places,” said Praveen Tripathi,ASP (Barrackpore).

While Balbir Singh and Ganpat Ram were facing trial for their alleged involvement in a burglary case that took place in Bijpur in North 24-Parganas in 2008,Manirul Ali has been accused of being involved in a narcotic smuggling case. The trio was to get their verdict on Tuesday, said a senior police officer.
