“It is a big question from where the men procured the jammers that are illegal and are only used by intelligence or security agencies," Public Prosecutor Bivas Chakraborty said at a press meet following the sentencing. (Representational Image) A sessions court in Hooghly on Tuesday sentenced three men to life imprisonment in a case of robbery in which they allegedly used electronic devices like jammers to loot money from a private finance firm’s branch in Chandannagar in September 2022.
Additional District Sessions Judge Shiv Shankar Ghosh said more restrictions on use of arms and ammunition and electronic devices like jammers and magnetic wave detectors should be made to reduce crime rate.
“It is a big question from where the men procured the jammers that are illegal and are only used by intelligence or security agencies,” Public Prosecutor Bivas Chakraborty said at a press meet following the sentencing.
The three – Bittu Kumar alias Karan, Bittu Kumar alias Chotu alias Badal, and Guddu Kumar alias Dharmendra alias Raj – were convicted under IPC sections 307 (attempt to murder), 392 (robbery), 397 (dacoity), 394 (causing hurt), 326 (causing grievous injury by weapons) and 34 (acts in furtherance of common intention), and under the Arms Act.
The incident took place on September 21, 2021, at a branch of Muthoot Fincorp in Hooghly district’s Chandannagar. According to police, four men with automatic arms entered the firm’s premises in a busy market and started assaulting staff. “A staff member pressed the alarm and the sensor system alerted the firm’s security control at Visakhapatnam. They alerted their officials in Kolkata who informed police. A police team reached to the spot and cordoned off the building. But they came under fire from the robbers, who had jammed the communication network,” an officer said.
