Election officials said that as of Tuesday evening, they received 2,352 objections to the draft voters’ list for the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) polls. Wednesday is the last day for voters to file their objections.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Sachin Pawar, who heads the election department in Pimpri-Chinchwad, said they will decide on objections raised by voters regarding incorrect names, addresses, names appearing in other areas, and other complaints.

The election office will publish the final voters’ list on December 5. ”This is as per the schedule sent to us by the State Election Commission,” said Pawar.

One of the complaints received by the election department concerns the names of nearly 4,000 voters from Ravet that allegedly appear on the Walhekarwadi voters’ list. Responding to this, Pawar said, ”All such complaints have been sent to the officials to verify them and make necessary corrections before the final voters’ list is published.”

Seema Sawale, a former corporator, also complained that 4,500 names from Indrayani Nagar and Balaji Nagar have been deleted.

Officials said the State Election Commission had sent them a list of 92,000 double entries. ”We have put 250-300 employees to verify them as to whether these are double entries or some of them indeed have similar names. All these corrections will be carried out and put in the final voters’ list,” Pawar said.

Meanwhile, Municipal Commission Shravan Hardikar held a meeting with election officials Tuesday and directed them to ensure that all necessary corrections, including names, addresses, age, and areas, are carried out before publishing the final voters’ list.

In another development, workers and leaders of the NCP (SP) burned copies of the draft voters’ list Tuesday to protest against the confusion and errors present in it. They demanded that the election office make all necessary corrections, including removing duplicate names, before publishing the final list.

Although the election department has not yet announced the exact date for the PCMC polls, according to official sources, the elections are likely to be held in February. The elections will be conducted under the four-member ward system, with 128 corporators elected across 32 electoral wards.

The last PCMC election was held in February 2017. The BJP grabbed power, unseating the NCP in that election. After the term of the civic body ended on February 22, the state government appointed an administrator, Shekhar Singh, who was transferred to Nashik last month.
