2 more die in post-poll clashes

Two days after the Lok Sabha polls results were declared,sporadic violence continued in the state,with two people losing their lives over the past 24 hours.

Two days after the Lok Sabha polls results were declared,sporadic violence continued in the state,with two people losing their lives over the past 24 hours. Arindam Mandal (37),a Forward Bloc activist,was killed at Kaliachawk in Malda Sunday night while and Rafizul Mian (33),a Trinamool activist,was killed at Goskadanga in Cooch Behar.

IG (law and order) Raj Kanojia said a few persons have been arrested in connection with the killings. He said additional forces have been deployed in Cooch Behar,Malda and Howrah,which have been hit by violence after the counting process was over on May 16. Kanojia said some areas in these districts continued to be tense.

Tension gripped Kaliachawk when the Forward Bloc activist was killed Sunday night allegedly by Congress activists. Ashoke Ghosh,state secretary of Forward Bloc,said Mandal was lynched by Congress and Trinamool activists,who were returning from a rally,at Duisatadi village while he was returning home.

Gopal Sikdar,local leader of Forward Bloc,said five-six persons hit Mandal on head with bricks. A bleeding Mandal was first taken to the block hospital and later to Malda district hospital,where he was declared dead on arrival.

Meanwhile,the Trinamool called for a 12-hour bandh at Mathabhanga sub-division in Cooch Behar after a party activist was killed Sunday night. Rafizul Mian (33) was killed at Goshkadanga following a clash between CPM and Trinamool supporters. He was allegedly beaten by wooden sticks and iron rods. He was admitted to local hospital with critical injuries,where he died later.
