15 flat owners allowed to return

A high-level government team today allowed a group of people to return to their flats in the least-affected blocks of the partially-burnt Stephen Court building.

A high-level government team today allowed a group of people to return to their flats in the least-affected blocks of the partially-burnt Stephen Court building. The permission, however, has been granted with certain conditions.

A joint government team, comprising senior officers of the fire department, police and the CESC visited the building today and gave nod to 15 flat owners comprising nine families and owners of six commercial establishments. The flats where the people have been allowed are spread over blocks three and four of the building. These two blocks were the least-affected ones in the March 23 fire that claimed 43 lives.

The permission is provisional subjected to a lot of terms and clauses that the residents need to adhere. The visiting team was happy with the restoration work carried out in the blocks. The CESC officials were also satisfied with the new electric wiring work.

“We have asked the concerned residents to modify the floor structures if it is on mezzanine. Also,we have asked the restaurants and commercial setups to install smoke detection machines and sprinklers at every corner. Only after all this is done and they are willing to sign the risk bond, will they be granted permission to enter the building and live there,” said a member of the team.

The decision, however, failed to remove the anxiety and the air of discontentment among the residents. “Even if we enter they will not allow us to use the lifts. Restoring the water supply and electricity will also take some more days,” said a one of the residents.

“It is impossible to restructure the whole of the mezzanine floor within such a short span of time. Most of the restaurants in Park Street have mezzanine flooring since ages. Also we have incurred heavy losses. Further delay will only add to it,” said a staff of Silver Grill,a restaurant on the ground floor of the building .

“It is to be seen when the residents of the other two blocks will get permission to re-occupy. At the present rate,I don’t expect to move in before six months, which may be very difficult for many residents,” said Debasis Guha Niyogi, convener of the residents’ association.
