J&K terror plot foiled: Two held, hunt on for five more

During interrogation, sources said, they revealed having dropped five of their accomplices in the forests at Jaranwali

THREE DAYS ahead of panchayat elections in Jammu and Kashmir after a gap of nine years, the Army on Wednesday foiled a major terror plot to derail the electoral process, apprehending two terrorists along with arms and ammunition.

Identifying the two terrorists as Shabir Ahmed and Mohammad Aqib, both residents of Pulwama, sources said that hunt is on for their five other accomplices whom they were suspected to have dropped in the forests at Jaranwali on Surankote-Bhimber Gali road. The security forces and police cordoned off the area when reports last came in.

Giving details, sources said the arrested terrorists were travelling in a Tavera vehicle No. JK-01R-5936. At Jarranwali, troops of 25 Rashtriya Rifles searched the vehicle and found them in possession of AK-56 rifles.

During interrogation, sources said, they revealed having dropped five of their accomplices in the forests at Jaranwali. Soon thereafter, security forces and police launched searches in the area.

This came a day after the seizure of a huge cache of arms, ammunition and explosives having Chinese markings in Akhnoor sector’s Palanwala area. Pointing out that the seizure was the outcome of a coordinated effort by Directorate of Revenue Intelligence with the Army, sources said the seized catche was being brought into the state from across the border by a Pakistani terrorist who was killed by the troops.
