Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao will inaugurate the Martyrs’ Memorial at Tank Bund Thursday evening, concluding the 21-day celebration to mark the 10th year of state formation.

The stainless steel structure in the shape of an earthen oil lamp, built at a cost of Rs 179 crore, is meant as a symbolic tribute to over 2,000 people who sacrificed their lives in the pursuit of achieving a separate state of Telangana over the last six decades. The state was carved out of the then-unified Andhra Pradesh on June 2, 2014.

Given the event, roads leading to the venue have been shut for traffic between 3 pm and 9 pm. As part of the celebrations, a ceremonial parade by police is arranged at the memorial. A candle-light procession by 5,000 artists, showcasing the culture and tradition of Telangana, will be a part of the celebrations while marching from the Dr BR Ambedkar statue to the memorial.

Spread across 3.29 acres on the banks of Hussainsagar Lake and a built-up area of over 2.88 lakh sq. ft, the Martyrs Memorial has a dedicated space on the first floor to pay tributes to the sons of Telangana who laid down their lives during the struggle.

“While the whole structure is a tribute to the martyrs, this dedicated space with a red granite stone structure will allow people to offer flowers or pay their tributes to the martyrs,” said sculptor M Venkata Ramana Reddy, who designed the memorial and oversaw the construction.

CM Rao will pay his tributes at around 6.30 pm and then turn on lights on the flame (made of low carbon structural steel) atop the monument as a symbolic expression of lighting the “Amara Jyothi”.

On the first floor, it houses a museum, photo gallery, and audio-visual room with a seating capacity for 70 people, besides toilets and escalators. A special song on Telangana will be released on the occasion in the CM’s presence. There is a convention hall with a seating capacity for 500 people, a lobby area, and toilets on the second floor.

The third floor has a restaurant with a viewpoint and open terrace seating. A mezzanine floor here also adds to the restaurant with a glass roof. All this is besides, a parking space for 335 four-wheelers and 400 two-wheelers in basements 1 and 2 that also doubles as maintenance areas with restrooms and a lounge area. Meanwhile, the ground floor also has a maintenance area, a workshop space for exhibitions, and souvenir shops.

The state government has also arranged for the CM to address the gathering and felicitate families of Telangana martyrs. The event will conclude with a drone show involving 800 drones to showcase the growth and development of Telangana over the last decade.
