Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday attended a meeting of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) in Hyderabad to discuss the modalities of the caste survey that the state government is set to carry out from Wednesday.

At the meeting, he interacted with civil society organisations, caste abolition activists, human rights advocates, and Congress leaders, among others, said state Congress president B Mahesh Kumar Goud.

“Rahul Gandhi suggested that there should not be any discrimination in the conduct of the comprehensive socio, educational, economic, employment, political and caste survey as per the promise made by him before last year’s Assembly polls,” Goud said. On October 11, Telengana government ordered a door-to-door household survey of the entire state. It said the survey was being undertaken “so as to plan and implement various socio, economic, educational, employment opportunities for the Backwards Classes, SC and ST citizens… and other weaker sections”.

Following the top court order allowing sub-classification of SCs and STs for reservations, the BC community leaders in the state have urged the government to conduct a separate BC castes survey and delegate quotas as per their numerical strengths.

SC and ST groups have also sought a separate survey of the numerical strength of various castes within SCs and STs so that government job benefits, allocations in healthcare and  education, can be given to vulnerable communities among them.
