The contentious Subansiri Lower Dam project on the Assam-Arunachal border was hit by a landslide on Monday during pre-monsoon rain in the region. The National Hydro-Electric Power Corporation (NHPC), however, said it is “on target” to begin operations in the project by June this year.

Parts of Northeast India have been receiving pre-monsoon rain and hailstorms. Videos captured by locals on Monday showed soil and boulders crashing down a hillside that has been cut for construction alongside where work is underway on the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project at Gerukamukh in Assam’s Dhemaji district.

The project’s executive director Vipin Gupta said the landslide has not caused damage to the project. “There were some overhang that we were planning to remove by blasts. That portion has fallen off by itself because of the rainfall,” he said.

A district administration official said the NHPC has informed them that there is “nothing to panic about”. “We have been informed that there was some rain due to which some rocks fell down, which were supposed to be removed in any case. They said the project will not be affected in any manner. We will be doing a check on the ground to verify this and see if there are any measures to be taken,” said the official.

Despite the inclement weather conditions even before the onset of monsoon this year, Gupta said the NHPC is “on target” to begin operations in two units of the dam.
