Following two recent incidents of assault on foreign tourists in Goa, the Goa Police have written to the State Tourism department urging it to cancel licences of two resorts in North Goa citing lack of adherence to safety protocols.
On the intervening night of March 28 and 29, a 29-year-old Dutch tourist, who had arrived in Goa for a yoga retreat, was allegedly molested and stabbed by a staffer at a resort in Goa where she was staying. The accused resort employee had also stabbed another person, who had rushed to the rescue of the woman. Goa police had arrested the accused, Abhishek Verma, a native of Uttarakhand, in the case.
In another incident in March 2023, two hotel employees were arrested for allegedly assaulting a Russian tourist in her hotel room during an alleged robbery attempt.
In the letter to the Tourism department, police have stated that in one of the recent cases, the resort did not have a CCTV installed and no security guard had been deputed on the premises. “The verification of the accused employee had not been conducted.
The resorts had violated safety norms and put the safety of tourists at risk,” said a police officer.
Nidhin Valsan, SP, North Goa, said, “We have written to the Tourism department urging it to cancel licences of two resorts for violating safety norms.”
After the attack on the Dutch tourist, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said that all the hotels had been instructed to enrol their staff for a labour card issued by the labour department.
“All the hotels have been directed to enrol their staff for the labour card, which will help in keeping their records and permanent addresses. The hotels should do background checks of staffers before employing them,” Sawant told the state legislative Assembly last week.
Goa Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte had said that police verification of workers at hotels and resorts, especially those employing people from outside the state, should be conducted.
