Hundreds of Zamrudpur residents have been evacuated by the Delhi Police. There are houses on one side of the intersection where the Metro pillar fell, and senior officers said the girder is still standing and could fall during rescue operations.
The police decided to evacuate the colony up to 500 metres from the site of the incident to make sure no one gets hurt if any further incident occurs. This is just a precautionary step and the girder will be removed properly.
We started our operations soon after the incident occurred. The girder is tilted towards this colony and the residents have been evacuated to a lane away from the spot. Also,no one is being allowed to come near the site of the incident, a senior police officer said. Both men and women police officers were put on duty to evacuate houses and make sure no civilians are around.
I havent had anything since morning. I left my wife and children at a relatives home and came back to see the developments. I dont know how long it will take them to remove the debris. I presume it will take a day or two, Kanhaiya Lal,a resident of Zamrudpur, said.
The entire area around the spot was cordoned off and no one was allowed to enter the roped area. We cant take chances. Rescue work is on and if any civilian gets hurt we will have more problems. We have deputed more force and one company of the CP Reserve has been sent to the spot, a senior police officer said.
