After a knee injury forced him to withdraw from the ITF Futures tournament in the capital last week in which he was the second seed,Yuki proved his top-seed status on Monday when he won his first round match at another ITF Mens Futures at the RK Khanna stadium, the last tournament of the Indian leg this season.
Just a day before their match,Yuki had promised his good friend Joel Kincaid a big feast of the local food after the tournament but standing together for the draw ceremony, they realised the bonhomie would end as the two were facing each other. Instead of a feast,Yuki is now responsible for Kincaids Indian trip being cut short as he beat the American 6-2 6-4.
Though the scoreline might suggest that it was an easy comeback match,it was hardly so for Yuki who is still troubling with 100% court movement after his Jumpers Knee made him sit out for two Futures events in the city.
This week is not about the results for me. Im just trying to assess my condition, have some fun on the courts, there is really not much to lose so I just want to try out how Im playing. Wins are just a bonus,I have told myself that I will only reach for whatever I can get easily so if I leave some balls over the week, thats okay by me, Yuki says.
Yuki had both his knees scrapped as a protective measure and if Kincaid thought of trying to use that to his advantage,he was quite mistaken as Yuki was determined to play shorter points, bring in more variation and come on to the net more often. Kincaids inexperience he hasnt won a main draw match since June last year was also obvious against the number one seed.
Yuki broke him twice in the first set to lead 3-1 and then finished the first set at 6-2. In the second, although he got broken first to trail 4-2,he broke right back for 4-3 and then won the next three games on a trot.
I put more pressure on his backhand and made a constant endeavour to play shorter points. The courts were also slow and bouncy which I used in my favor by employing some spin, he says.
The only reason why Yuki is participating this week is because the tournament happens to be in his hometown but he isnt being greedy enough to over-exert himself in the doubles as well. Plus it wouldnt have been fair on my partner that Im playing without 100% fitness, he adds.
