With 27 candidates of the Congress being between the age group of 21 and 30,the party claims that a lot of emphasis is being put on giving the youth a chance this MCD elections.
Congress candidates Harsh Chaudhary contesting from Jiwanpur,Faujiya Khatoon from Kardam Puri and Seema Bhatia from Badarpur are all 22 years old.
Khatoon,a school teacher,says younger candidates can change the face of the nation. Hum is desh ki takdeer badal sakte hain aur badal ke dikyange (We can change the future of the nation and we will) says Khatoon,who has taken leave from school till election results are announced. She says she will continue teaching or not,depending on the work load she might have if is she is elected.
I have done my graduation from Delhi University and have a diploma from Jamia Millia Islamia in elementary teachers education. I started teaching in Saraswati Vidya Niketan in Kardam Puri over a year ago and decided to contest elections as politics is one of my favourite subjects, she says.
Khatoon,who is married,is now concentrating on door-to-door campaigning and her family too goes along with her for moral support. Since I became eligible to contest elections only recently,I was never really part of the Congress party,even though my party has been associated with the party for long, she says.
Harsh Chaudhary contested in Delhi University Students Union elections as a candidate of the National Students Union of India in 2010. I wanted to work for the people and,therefore,decided to contest MCD elections. I am pursing my graduation from Aurobindo College, he says.
Besides these candidates,Congress has one candidate who is 23 years old and another who is 24. There are 80 candidates between the age group of 31 and 40 and 109 candidates who are between the age of 40 and 50. We are not bringing in any big names for campaigning. Our MLAs,MPs,Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and I will only be campaigning in the MCD polls, said DPCC chief,Delhi J P Aggarwal.
