Young at Art

A wooden box placed at the center of an empty room might remind most about the story of the Pandora's Box.

A wooden box placed at the center of an empty room might remind most about the story of the Pandora’s Box. But artist Kundo Yumnam has used it to depict issues related to censorship and curiosity. “It is an interactive work and it is up to the viewers to open the box or not. Nobody knows what is inside,so it’s open to interpretation,” says the NIFT graduate from Manipur,as she gives finishing touches to the untitled work at Khoj Studios in Khirki extension.

The 28-year-old is one of the five participants of Peers 2011,an annual programme organised by Khoj Studios, that gives recent art graduates a platform to showcase their talent. The other participants include Chennai-based Aarti Sunder,Maripelly Praveen Goud from Baroda,Muthiah Kasi from Coimbatore and Delhi-based Pallavi Singh. “I am confident about my work,” says Goud, who has created an artwork with grid paper, that has been twisted and crushed into various forms.

Singh,on the other hand, places her three-layered installation, made of acrylic paper, photographs and a photo tray,in a room with walls painted in black. Titled Dark Room, the work depicts gender equations. “I observed the behaviour of men and women in unisex salons, buses and other public places. The bottom layer is the ‘tray’,where we develop the pixels; the second one is called ‘negative’,that is the inner desires; and the top layer is the ‘reality’,portrayed by photographs. The room is where everything is developed,” says Singh, who has participated in several group exhibitions in the Capital.

A graduate in graphic designing from DJ Academy of Design,Coimbatore,Kasi, makes his debut in the art circuit with this exhibition. “I was into graphics and animation but always thought like an artist,” says the 22-year-old,adding that his work depicts “monotonous life and dreams”.

Reviewing the work of the young artists, meanwhile, will be Aparna Singh,a graduate from Visva Bharati,Shantiniketan. The 23-year-old will design a catalogue and compose a critical essay on the artworks on a blog. The works are not for

sale, but each artist will get a stipend of Rs 18,000.

The exhibition is on from June 17 to 19 at Khoj Studios,S-17,Khirki Extension. Contact: 55655874
